ACT/Sthn NSW apprentice wins top HIA award

John McGown was named Housing Industry Association Corinthian Doors Australian Jim Brookes Apprentice of the Year at the 2009 HIA-CSR Australian Housing Awards in Brisbane today.

South Australian entrant, Ben Reeve, narrowly missed out on the enviable award, receiving a highly commended award from the judges.

In the end, John McGown’s enthusiasm for his trade impressed the judges, as did his pride in his work, aspirations to excel and aim to be his own boss. John took up an apprenticeship in carpentry based on the many opportunities it offered.

Praised by his host trainer, Thomas Henderson, for his ability to communicate and interact with clients and work colleagues, John is passionate about the building industry. His dedication and focus is evident in his considered approach to the issues facing both the industry and apprentices in Australia.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd attended the awards luncheon at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre and praised the exceptional quality of the award entries.

Congratulating John McGown, HIA Managing Director Ron Silberberg said, “This year’s HIA-CSR Australian Housing Awards are a testament to the strength and resilience of the Australian housing industry.

“Once again, entries were of an exceptional standard and highlight the enormous talent and versatility of the best in the business.”
